Help me give my students world literature like Purple Hibiscus, How Dare the Sun Rise, Red Scarf Girl, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and Escape from Camp 14. These provide valuable insight of other cultures throughout the world.
Literature is an amazing way to experience a different world without having to purchase a plane ticket. The final project for my senior literature class is to read a book from a different time period, place, and culture. Through this, the students are able to learn about different time periods and places while also engaging in the conflicts in the story. Each book has been picked with the seniors in mind; their last English project of the year is to read their book in a group and paint a ceiling tile that relates to their book. The students read descriptions of each book and rank them by interest. Due to this, it is crucial that the classroom library has a variety to book options, so the students are able to find a book that they enjoy.
These books will allow students to have control over what they are reading while also being engaged.
The students will be able to read books that interest them. This project teaches the students responsibility, collaboration skills, self-efficacy, and independence. The best way to prepare students to be successful outside of school is to provide them with resources to help them grow as people. These books will help them learn about the world outside of the United States while teaching them key 21st century skills.
