My students want to journey outside of our city limits. Currently I teach a 5th grade collaborative class of students. We are a Title 1 school in Virginia with about 50% of the kids being economically disadvantaged. Many kids had no money to pay for agendas or even bring school supplies.
Due to the economics challenges my students face, many have never been outside the city limits. They lack knowledge about the rest of the United States and the World. I feel it is important for them to learn about major events, problems, solutions, opinions, etc. of others through reading.
In order to meet these needs I would like each of my students to receive their own copy of Time for Kids. Through this magazine they can learn reading strategies such as decoding, context clues, summarizing etc. They will also learn about the world around them. I will be able to use a high interest magazine to teach them skills and current events. This magazine will also be something that will belong to them.
Please help my students to take a journey. Their bags are packed and they are ready for a ticket.
