Traveling to Another Land Through Maps and Books

Help me give my students 30 place-mat world maps to allow them the opportunity of practicing map skills needed for geography. Help me also give my students a classroom library as our school currently does not have one.

My Students

My students from Oklahoma City are hard working and love to learn. They have expressed great interest in Social Studies and how it applies to their lives. They enjoy sharing about their love for sports and for different subjects. They are expressive and like learning content in different ways.

My students are all about feeling like a family and that is what is important to all of us.

Each student does everything they can to encourage and lift one another up. My students care greatly about how to be effective citizens and how they can help their community.

My Project

One of the most important skills in Geography is knowing how to read a map. Having a classroom set of world map place-mats allows my students to practice using latitude and longitude. I will be able to assign students various assignments that will allow them to become masters at their map skills. One example would be: Find the absolute location (coordinates) of Moscow, Russia. Another example would be: What city is a 0 degrees latitude and 24 degrees longitude? The maps will allow students to not only master our state standards but give them confidence to show others how to read a map rather it is on a phone or not.

Having a classroom library is very important to me and my students.

My students love to read, but our school unfortunately does not have a library right now. My students have less than 20 books to choose from in my classroom and sadly I have more students in a class period than I have books. Having a classroom library with a wide variety of books will allow my students to explore things that we are learning in Geography through literature they like.

Having other supplies in the classroom such as cleaning supplies allows my students to have a clean and safe environment to learn in. Having certain things laminated helps to preserve my resources so that I can use them continuously.
