My classroom is made up 4th/5th graders who absolutely love to read. I am always looking for more material to encourage their love of reading, while deepening their critical thinking skills, vocabulary, and comprehension. The school district that I teach in has a low income rate of over 70%, as well as a mobility rate of more than 30%. Students absolutely love the Storyworks magazine as they are so incredibly engaged and thrilled to get a get a new issue. I want to continue with this magazine, while continuing to increase their media literacy skills.
My Project
My reluctant readers absolutely love to read. I can't get certain book series in their hands quick enough. After already spending a year with my students, I know what books are highly engaging to them and motivate the to read. The Who Was series highlights so many parts of history, and famous people and places around the world. Students are always so excited when new books arrive from this series.
My hope is that the confidence they find by reading these popular series allows them to explore different reading genres, all while boosting their Lexile scores.
This particular group of students is very interested in Greek Mythology and I have selected highly engaging, informational texts for them to enjoy.
I feel as if all these books will greatly benefit my classroom. My students are finally excited to read, and I want to get them books they will truly enjoy and beg me to read.
