Help me give my students the world through literature! I am working to build a diverse classroom library and I am in need of a classroom printer in order to print students' work without having to leave my room.
This is my first year at a new school district. I am moving back to my hometown. I worked for 15 years in the same district prior to this coming up year. I know many of my incoming students and the ones I do not know, I know a lot about them. I will be switching subjects as well. We live in a rural farm town that sadly doesn’t have many jobs available to offer parents. The majority of my students live well below the poverty line. These kids are the ones that break your heart because they come to school to get basic needs like food. School is their safe space. Even with the world at their fingertips, many students of mine don’t realize how big and diverse the world is. The majority of them live in our little corner of Northeast Texas and will only experience things through education. They all deserve the same experiences that students in the large cities have to the disposal. Even if they never want to leave the rural life, I just want to share the world with them.
My Project
I want to encourage students to put down their phones and pick up a book. Sadly, the library at my new school is severely out of date and we are responsible for creating a diverse classroom library. My school does not have a lot of funds available to spend and I have been trying to find appealing novels for self-selected reading for my 9th grade English class.
I firmly believe that students are in desperate need to spend time with an actual book in hand.
We will start the year out discussing different types of literature and then they will have to choose a novel to read on their own. While technology is a fabulous thing, it also has its drawbacks. Many students find reading a book to be boring. I believe that every student can find something they love to read; we just have to find the right book for each individual.
You will notice that books are not the only things on my list. I can provide a lot of necessities out of my own pocket, but I do have a limit on what I can spend. The school does not supply us with a printer in each room. There is only one printer available on campus to us teachers. It will be hectic trying to ask students to save and share an assignment with me. Then, I will have to run to the workroom leaving my students unattended while I print papers to be highlighted and revised. Having my own printer will make things much easier. The other things, such as cleaners and wipes, are easy for me to purchase as needed throughout the year. However, we are not provided with Kleenex! That is probably the one thing most used at any school.
