Traveling Song Tales

My students need song tale books for our library so that they can share them with their family members and listen to them at home.

My Students

In our Title 1 school, the students come from diverse backgrounds. We are made up of about 350 students, and about 70% receive free or reduced lunch. We are a semi-urban, low socio-economic status school in Connecticut, and many of our students come from single parent homes.

Music has become a huge part of our school culture, but students have trouble accessing some of their favorite activities outside of school.

In our younger grades, we use the music curriculum "First Steps in Music." Our students love making music in this curriculum, and love ending the class by hearing me sing song tales. Often, students will ask for their favorite song tale to be sung again and again!

My Project

Each week in music class, we end with a song tale. Sometimes, I sing it to the students and they listen, but often, I will sing it to them while also showing them a picture book. The students love to see the visuals of these fun songs.

These song books would be added to our school's library, along with a recorded copy of the song using both QR codes and CD's.

This would allow for the students to check them out, take them home, and hear the story again and again. Additionally, they could share it with family members and friends. This will encourage music making and reading skills, and encourage the students to practice both!
