Traveling Around the World Learning About Diverse Cultures#2
My students need an iPad Mini to develop multicultural awareness by being exposed to diverse cultures, languages and ideologies. They also need an OtterBox to protect the iPad Mini.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine 1st graders being able to travel around the world without having to have their economically disadvantaged parents spend a penny! Well, that's exactly what I want my 1st graders to be able to do with the iPad Mini.
I want my 1st graders to explore diverse cultures and languages, and share social science/science ideas with other 1st grade students through Skype without even having to leave the classroom.
My students are English Language Learners attending a public school in California. Our school is a Title I school, and the majority of the students qualify for free lunch. They come from low income families in which many times both parents work in order to maintain their household. Their parents cannot provide them with multicultural travel experiences because they have to worry about providing them with the bare necessities, like food and shelter. Unfortunately, at home my students don't have technological access due to economic hardships. The only place they are able to access technology is at school and our school is limited due to severe budget cuts. In fact, we have an old Mac computer that freezes every time my students try to access basic educational websites or any website for that matter.
My Project
With the iPad Mini I plan to have my students connect to other classrooms of culturally diverse first grade students in different regions within our country as well as other countries through Skype. Once connected I will be able to provide my students with the multicultural experiences needed in order for them to grow as culturally unbiased citizens. Through "Skype in the Classroom," they will have innumerable experiences with diverse cultures and languages, as well as ideas that will help them be able to work with people of all genders, races, and cultures in the future without having a feeling of culture shock or prejudism. They will also be able to travel around the world and learn about other cultural traditions, customs, languages, and civil rights ideologies without having their parents feel like they are in an economic bind. Having multicultural awareness will help my students respect and accept each others differences. The OtterBox will keep the iPad Mini safe from damage.
With your generous donations, my students will be able to compare and contrast their own cultural, linguistic, and ideological practices with other first graders and will discover they have some similarities, despite their different cultures.
They will also be able to share concepts learned in the areas of social science and civil rights. Your unconditional support will take my students on a never ending educational journey without the need of a passport, visa or a penny! Thanks in advance!
