This will be my first year teaching 4th grade mathematics, science, and Virginia studies. I will have approximately 50 young leaders, who have been affected by the effects of pandemic learning since their second-grade year. This will be my 11th year teaching in a Title I school; meaning that over half of the students receive a free or reduced-price lunch.
My students are energetic, creative, and ambitious learners, who would benefit from new and innovative opportunities!
Additionally, the students at my school come from diverse backgrounds, which means they all have different needs. As a teacher based in a low-income/high-poverty area (deemed "that school" to some), our school community faces challenges on a daily basis. Our dedication to learning only makes my present and future scholars stronger and more determined to reach their goals. I can’t wait to see how much they grow throughout the year!
My Project
This class set of books will provide students the materials they need to immerse themselves in VA History, through a first-person account of living in Jamestown. Students will complete daily assignments in my classroom during our whole class novel study. These books will help students further develop their critical thinking skills, increase reading comprehension, encourage text-to-self connections, and spark a love for both reading and history in many of my students. Students in my classroom have never been able to work with whole class novel studies before and I know they will love having the opportunity to work closely and collaborate with their peers on a daily basis in VA History! Any help to get this project started in my class will be so appreciated!
