This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When you can't afford to travel, the next best thing is to travel through a wonderfully crafted and powerful story. My students need to take a book journey to show them a world they can't afford to see firsthand.
Sadly, many of the students at our inner city Chicago public school don't leave the block they live on very often.
They come from families with a low-income and travel is not an option right now. Many only see the beautiful Chicago skyline from our classroom window. Since the economy has put a damper on discretionary income, we need to get creative about helping our students see a world outside of their city block.
My Project
I want to take my students on a world voyage through books! Our book journeys include war-torn Pakistan, Istanbul, and a Mayan village in Mexico. What better way to see the world from inside our classroom than through reading and discussing great books? Our 8th graders will build their comprehension skills through Book Clubs that will incorporate verbal skills through debate, writing skills through journals, and analytical skills through discussion and questioning.
Can you help us open our minds and travel the world through books?
We are anxious to get our trip started and need your help. Please consider delivering the world to our doorsteps! We are waiting to take off!
