How can our class go to Sudan and Mexico? We can travel there through our imagination and books! We can look at pictures, tell stories and use art to show all the things that we will learn!
My group of 6th grade students are intelligent and inspiring young men and women.
Our kids attend school in Illinois at a charter school where about 97% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. My school currently serves 5th-10th graders. We are in a neighborhood that sadly sees a lot of violence, gangs and foreclosures of property. In order for my kids to be successful people, they must be strong, resilient, and perseverant. My students are creative and love any opportunity to read books and articles out loud to the class. They love hearing and asking me questions about my experiences visiting far away places. They love learning about different cultures and hearing about people who have different experiences then them.
My Project
This year my students will read two novels in social studies, Esperanza Rising and A Long Walk To Water. Both stories have teenage characters who overcome adverse circumstances, are based in different countries, and will allow us to learn about two different parts of the world. We will use folders to keep our work from the units organized and I will use the resources on different continents so we better understand the geography and culture of the places we are reading about. These novels will help reinforce skills that students learn in their ELA class. We will do hands on and creative projects with construction paper to show what we learned in our novels.
Allow my students to travel with out leaving our classroom and learn about other children who overcome struggles in life and become amazing people along the way.
These resources will enhance our social studies experience and give us the ability to make our learning come to life! It will give my students more time to read and explore new parts of the world through a novel. Help my students define their own reality and see what the world has to offer them.
