My Project

Hi there! I am Emily Mrosko and I teach high school English on the west side of Chicago. My high school is located in West Garfield Park, which ranks #1 for violent crimes in all of Chicago and Cook County.

You might think, why would an English teacher need so many mental health resources?

In our building, every single staff member is on the front lines regarding helping our students cope with some truly unimaginable moments. These items will not only help them alleviate triggers but give them coping mechanisms they can take outside of the walls of our school as well, into their life as a whole. Coloring is exceptionally calming for my students. Plus they can take copies home to siblings and friends who are also struggling. Food insecurity is a very real thing in my daily life as an urban educator so the snacks would be purposed toward that. Lastly, hygiene items are in high demand as students are often unhoused or without basic hygiene necessities.
