This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my Title I elementary school are very sweet, polite, and caring. That being said there are a handful of special friends that I work with that either have emotional issues, family issues or need support in interpersonal skills.

Reading and discussing books together, kiddos will be able to share their experiences and deal with their emotions.

I particularly admire that many of my kiddos have embraced self-advocacy and ask for brain breaks or cool-down breaks. I work one on one with some students and the rest in small groups to learn and practice coping skills. I’m trying to provide more tools and incentives to keep kiddos on track, healthy and confident. It’s truly remarkable what some of my kiddos have endured in their short time on this planet so far. My goal is to help them feel strong, resilient, confident, and loved.

My Project

Many of my peers have pointed out how many kiddos are in their classrooms who have experienced serious trauma. I hear about it regularly as a counselor and during intervention team meetings with parents. Yet, we don't have a lot of books or resources to support these kids/teachers in the classroom.

I'd like to have a checkout system for individual books and book sets for classroom teachers and kids to check out that will help them with their issues.

I'm trying to get books that satisfy all age groups between kindergarten and fifth grade. It's mindblowing how much trauma some of these kids have experienced in their young lives already!

I'm hoping these books will spark conversations, which will lead to healing and change of behaviors. Ultimately kids want to be happy and good. These books will be the catalyst for healing and understanding.
