Trashion Show: Promoting Culture and Creativity with Recycled Couture

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The "Newcomer" population (English Language Learners newly arrived from other countries) at our school has been working hard to acclimate to a new culture and for many, a new way of learning in a school setting. In an effort to provide them with authentic and engaging activities to promote both their language acquisition and improve social integration in the school and community, my leadership students are collaborating with them on a project we're calling a "Trashion Show". All the students are learning from community members about sustainability and design principles and we will use them to create fashion from trash and recycled materials. With the help of bilingual leadership students, newcomers will design apparel and model it in the "Trashion Show" for the school and community.
With a heavy-duty sewing machine for recycled couture clothing construction, an inflatable screen and special lighting for the fashion show, newcomers and leadership students will have the materials they need to produce an annual event that will strengthen the connections between students and help the newcomers to feel more integrated in our community, all while advocating for sustainability.
In addition to the Trashion Show, the leadership students would use the inflatable screen to run a family game night for the community. Several times a year we serve dinner and play BINGO and Loteria games to bring families together for food and fun. We also invite local musical talent to perform, so the screen and lighting will not only improve the game visibility, but also level up the quality of the performances.
