Trash 2 Treasure: Helping the Environment With Disney

My Students

Voltaire said, "It is not the answers you give, but the questions you ask." I want my students to be able to ask questions and discover the answers through hands on science lessons that incorporate real-life problem-based learning opportunities.

I have 178 wonderful 8th grade students who are eager to learn about the world around them.

They are a very diverse group of young ladies and young me and are very curious and fascinated by what we have explored so far. They are eager for more hands-on opportunities than we can provide on a limited budget.

My Project

"The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul." Alfred Austin. My students need 5 tumbler composting bins, compost starter and books about composting to learn about sustainable gardening, reducing waste and helping the environment. My students will read the books on composting and use the composting bins to reduce waste going into landfills; providing life-giving nutrients to plants around the school, learning the process of composting, and helping the environment. After learning about the chemical processes and organisms that thrive in compost, they will write and illustrate their own children's book on composting.

With your help, students will learn to be good stewards of the earth; reducing waste, improving the soil and beautifying the school grounds, and passing that knowledge on to the next class.

This year's 8th graders will teach next year's 7th and 8th graders the importance of reducing waste and the benefits of composting, and the younger students will use the compost in a sustainable garden on site. Once started, we will be able to run the program for many years to come.
