The students of our school are a cohort of diverse, intelligent, and hardworking students from around the New York City Metropolitan area. Our school is a selective, public, college preparatory school with a focus on science, math, technology, and engineering that provides a challenging academic experience. It prepares students for careers in science, math, and engineering.
My classroom is not only a place of challenge and discovery, but also a place where students come to de-stress and learn everyday life skills.
Inside and out of the classroom, my students are inquisitive learners, never afraid to ask how our world works. They are also from very diverse backgrounds and come to school with various experiences that further deepen our classroom learning.
My Project
This project is designed to help students in our academic enrichment Executive Functioning Program. Many of our scholars come from families that have a lot of adversity in their lives (they are socioeconomically disadvantaged, many do not speak English, etc.). The families of these students care very much for their students but are sacrificing their time and efforts to make sure their entire family's basic needs are met (i.e. holding several jobs, working long shifts to earn more, etc. to make sure their is food on the table).
Due to challenges in their lives, many of our students in this program have not mastered basic executive functioning skills (i.e., time management, organization, communication, etc.).
Our program aims to teach and reinforce these these skills so that they can be successful in school and beyond. The support these students need is also dependent on their families, many of whom are Spanish speaking. With the requested laptops in this project, my student interns will help to make video content that assists students and their families with gaining these skills and reinforcing them at home.
For my interns, it gives them an opportunity to learn about holding a job and the work ethic needed to succeed in that job and help others.
