This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you like to dance and move your body to the days of the week? Would you like to learn the alphabet in more than one way?
My school is located a low socioeconomic neighborhood, where the parents are hardworking and the students work harder.
Most parents of my students have at least 2 jobs and some reside within a multifamily apartment due to the effects of the economy. The transient rate is high because residential homes are non-existent in my surrounding neighborhood, so students may often come and go due to the personal financial situation of their family and cost of living expenses. Most of my students' primary language is Spanish therefore, my incoming students are English Language Learners. I teach the Transitional Kindergarten class, composed of older 4 year olds and younger 5 year olds. My school contains about 95% English Language Learners with a current student population of about 600. The students who attend are eager, active learners with a willingness to try their best in all subjects. At times, home environment plays a factor, but our students manage to keep their heads up.
My Project
Using an iPod Touch would allow me to take all my music from my CDs and transfer them onto the iPod, in addition to downloading new age-appropriate music that would enhance my little ones' fine motor movements and actively engage them in more T-P-R (total physical response). I often encounter scratches on my CDs and it can become costly to have to replace them on a bi-monthly basis.
Using the "Letter of the Day" pocket chart will encourage an active role from my students in teaching them how to identify the letter, know the difference between upper case and lower case, write the letter, and learn about pictures that are associated with the letter of the day (Example: Letter of day: B Pictures : ball, balloon, bee, bat) This activity can be used as a student directed activity enhancement during center time or a whole group activity when re-introducing a letter during the week.
I feel that this project will enhance my 4 and 5 year old's desire to express themselves through music, eliminate the need to save CDs or scratch them, and create a better foundation for their phonemic awareness through a fun phonemic pocket chart activity.
