Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my class begins with breakfast and the alphabet video, and leads into introducing the rules of the classroom, songs, calendar, and flag salute. It ends with independent centers and free choice.

My school is located in a low, socioeconomic area comprised of a 94% Latino population .

Most of my students are second language learners. The school is actively involved within the community and leadership is very effective and active among the teachers and staff members. My students come to my class at the age of 4 and are at a great stage of their development because they are so eager to learn and curious about everything! The children who come to me often reside in apartments instead of homes and the transient rate is high due to a routine increase in rent in the surrounding areas. Some of my children sleep in the same living quarters as their parents, siblings and other family members who may reside with them.

My Project

When setting up learning centers in my classroom, I considered including a dollhouse. Providing a dollhouse center can help support oral language development in my students. A dollhouse is also very effective when used with second language learners. By manipulating dolls and using different voices to represent various family members, students are imitating real world experiences and practicing oral language in fun and meaningful ways. It is also important to have dolls in the dollhouse that reflect the ethnicity's of your students. The puppet stand will be placed in the room to provide easy access to the puppets during my children's dramatic playtime. It will function as a large asset in enhancing their interactive skills with one another.

Donations to my project will improve my classroom by adding advantages that my children do not have in their own homes.

Due to the fact that many of my children come from homes where parents often work multiple jobs, there is little time for interactive play. In addition, because many of the children come from homes with limited living space, the items requested will enhance their learning that homes can be comprised in various ways, with multiple living spaces.
