My Project
The mission in our classroom is to deepen our relationship to the Earth and with climate justice through our relation to food. By deepening our connection to the foods we eat our students get an understanding of how we are all connected and that the Earth is here to nourish us and in return we need to nourish the Earth.
Our students need updated tools so that they can create and enjoy the meals that they're making.
Currently we are cooking in a science lab, so we are making everything on table top induction burners and toaster ovens. The toaster ovens we have now do not have temperature control and take a long time to heat up, so often times my colleagues and I keep an eye on what they're making because it isn't ready until long after class is done. To have new ovens that can fit more and are more reliable will open up a whole new world of recipes to work on and allow our students to enjoy what they've made during class time. We only have 2 working single induction burners so during class most of our students aren't always getting the chance to work hands-on with what is on the stove, to have double top burners would give students more of an opportunity to have hands-on experience. The student's use rags on a daily basis for holding hot things, drying dishes, wiping down surfaces etc. Our school does not have a washing machine on campus so my colleagues are bringing home the rags every week to wash it themselves. To have a washing machine in our class would take an extra task off the plates of our teachers and allow the students to take on the responsibility of cleaning up after themselves.
