Transformative Reading for Diverse Population: Seeing Ourselves In Books
Help me give my students books from authors of various backgrounds, (ethnicity and cultures)! I'd love to reignite my students' interest in books!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
"When I first started reading in grade school I absolutely hated it." These words reflect the thoughts of a student in my class (J.E) that was asked their opinion on reading.
Unfortunately, there are students that have yet to be exposed to a book that would change their perception of reading.
In the very diverse population of students I get to teach, it's imperative that they know that there are authors and books that they can see themselves in!
I want my students to love what they read, to see themselves, similar experiences, characters that look like, talk like and have experienced things like my students have. With these new books, I hope that my students of various ethnicities and cultures can pick up a book from a Caribbean, Arabic, Hispanic/Latino, African American, etc. author and know, that there is a story that can impact them tremendously.
In the words of J.E. after finally finding a book that piqued her interest, "I learned that reading could transport me into a different place than the one I was currently in. I'm so glad I decided to pick up a book during covid because I don't know who I'd be if I didn't."
Every student deserves to experience the transformative power of reading.
