Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Although my students are fairly well acquainted with the physical world around them, the land of microscopic is still very abstract. With your help we can enliven these students understanding of the scientific method and expand their observable world to the dimension of microscopy.

The majority of my students are latinos living in Arizona, their parents are typical hard working family oriented Latin Americans who emphasize the importance of family.

A lot of them are living in over crowded homes with their Aunties and Uncles because for one reason or another their parents are no longer in the picture. The kids that I am working with are active, 13 year olds who, like any other teenager their age, are just looking to fit in. At the beginning of the year my students mentioned that they are hoping to study the sciences using a hands on approach. The school is a title one school where all the students are fed free meals each day, and the students have access to little or no educational resources dedicated to discovering their talents and abilities. This project will enliven them and inspire the spirit of discovery among my students.

My Project

As a class these microscopes will enable my students to be much more involved in their learning of cellular structures because as they survey living things they will be able to see the organelles and cellular structures that we have been learning about. In addition I hope to expose these kids to a whole new world of life beyond the eye. I can't wait to get some pond water and place it underneath the microscope to let the kids watch the single celled organisms zipping back and forth. I can't wait to scratch some skin cells off onto a slide and see if we can observe some bacteria, dust mites, and whatever else we might happen upon. I can't wait for them to observe the reproduction of single celled organisms first hand. These resources will also be an enormous asset as we try to inspire students with the spirit of curiosity. We will be constantly tweaking variables of temperature, light, and time of day to see how they relate to this new environment we have discovered.

My final reason for this solicitation is because I promised my students that I would do all I could to help them prepare for University life, and I think these materials will prove invaluable as I strive to cultivate an environment ubiquitous with scientific principles and understandings.

I am confident that these microscopes will infuse a spirit of curiosity and learning in my students.
