My students are a great group of students who are filled with a lot of energy. They are a mixture of Brooklyn natives and recent immigrants to our country. I have a large population of recent Yemeni immigrants. They come to school every single day excited to learn. Their excitement pushes me to do my best everyday.
Many of my recent Yemeni immigrants have experienced years of interrupted schooling, destruction of their homes and family members that have been lost due to the conflict in their home country.
Despite all of their trauma these kids are resilient and inspiring! They absolutely love sports and many of them can't wait for the school day to be over so they can go to basketball club or track practice! My goal is to help my students be the best athletes possible!
My Project
Weight training is a very important part of all team sport training. Building strength will help athletes prevent injury. Runners puts a lot of stress on their knees, hips and hip flexors, therefore runners need to build more muscle to protect those specific areas from injury. More muscle also equals faster speed. What runner doesn't want to win by being the fastest? What basketball player doesn't want to run laps around everyone on the court without getting winded? Lastly, building strength increases an athlete's efficiency by increasing VO2 max. The less oxygen used during a given time, the more efficient the athlete.
Every single student athlete, no matter what sport, can benefit from weight training.
At our school, we have a track team and a basketball team. I guarantee you that every one of my student athlete's performances will improve after building strength through weight training.
