My students need class sets of books to make learning history (and key historical figures) FUN!

My Students
For so many kids history is their least favorite subject when they start 4th grade. My goal is to change the way they view the world and have them leave my classroom feeling jazzed about social studies!
I have a FABULOUS class of 27 fourth graders in Georgia.
We are a group 50% boys, 50% girls. I have a mixture of Caucasian, African American, Bi-racial, Hispanic, and Asian students. One child has qualified as gifted and 2 of my students are autistic. The majority of my students qualify for free/reduced lunch. They are an eclectic mix of students, but they blend well together.
I haven't taught a class this large in many years, but with budget cuts come larger class sizes. It is very hard to meet everyone's needs when you have a larger class. There is a TREMENDOUS gap in ability in my classroom, but all of my students can benefit from this project by diving into history head first.
My Project
Let's face it... social studies textbooks are BORING! So many of our students are put off by social studies because of the amount of reading involved and their less than stellar reading skills. The novels from AKJ Books that I selected explore the lives of historical figures that Georgia students are supposed to be familiar with. The illustrations and the content are presented in a funny and interesting way. The novels are written on the level of the students, but rich with content that they need to know!
Using novels instead of textbooks allows for more meaningful learning experiences and allows students to make connections to what they are learning.
The books I selected from AKJ Books will make history come alive for my students while improving their reading skills at the same time! Benjamin Franklin, Sacagawea, and Thomas Jefferson are getting ready to come alive in 4th grade!
