My Students
For some of us, a high school diploma would not have been possible without the support of a team and the discipline that sports give you. As our track team continues to grow, we would love to have the tools needed to help us make the best of our practices so our team can reach new goals.
I teach at an all girls, Title I school in New York City.
Many of my girls come to me having never done organized sports before. For many, this is more than just organized exercise, it is a stress reliever, a break from the norm - a break from reality. School sports don't recognize poverty. Everyone is even on the playing field and that opens doors for my students to shine athletically, academically, and socially.
My Project
Sports play an important role in keeping a child healthy, both physically and academically. Keeping children safe and protected with the proper equipment is equally as important. These supplies will help our track team bring their focus back to running as the students won't have to worry about some of the basic wants a runner may have.
Working at a Title I school can present some challenges.
One is the fact that not all of the families are able to financially support the dreams and aspirations of their children. Some of our members need running sneakers so that they don't hurt their ankles or anything else when they run. All need proper fitting sports bras since they are crucial for ladies in sports. They give the correct support when running and jumping to prevent ligaments from stretching and posing a health risk. Finally, I am asking for reusable water bottles so the team can stay hydrated while getting rid of the need for their single-use plastic bottles.
I believe that getting some of these basic sports supplies will cut down on the need for my team to worry about anything but running during our practices and our meets. This alone can help them achieve goals and reach new heights!
