My Students

At our school, we foster a community of students with strong character and high self-esteem who display critical thinking skills that will enable them to become life-long learners. Our staff members and parents work together to educate more than 400 children in grades Pre K-6th. Our school is considered a Title I School with 100% of our students receiving free and reduced lunch. The 6th-grade students consist of four different class sections; totaling 120 students.

My classroom consists of 30 amazing scholars.

Each student is unique and brings vivacious energy to the classroom. The 30 scholars in my classroom have been selected to partake in the college prep program. The college prep program is rigorous, fostering a community of learners who model excellence, integrity, and ever-evolving skills for the 21st century. With the current state of our community due to the pandemic I know many are lacking the necessary resources to continue working at home.

My Project

My college prep scholars began their journey with me as their ELA teacher in June 2020. We began our novel study with the first part of a series written by Jason Reynolds entitled "Ghost". My scholars did a wonderful job with this novel study, even though we were faced with the challenges of the pandemic and reading virtually. I will admit scholars expressed difficulty by watching recordings of me reading the book to them and often time were unable to clearly make out the text.

Scholars loved the first book so much I ensured them when we returned in the fall we would continue with the next book in the series "Patina".

It is my hope that scholars, whether working on a block schedule in person or 100% virtually, will be able to better access the text with their own physical copy. I would like to help eliminate as many barriers to learning as possible during this time. By providing my scholars with physical copies of the text they will be able to read at their own pace, have access to reference text evidence, and the ability to go back and reread to gain a deeper understanding.
