My Students

I have 7 students in a K/1 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills as well as communication and social skills.

We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.

We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, group time to work on academic skills and writing, story time to work on comprehension, math, science and art time where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and following picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social and communication skills.

My Project

My students have difficulty engaging in play activities with each other due to delays in social and communication skills. They need daily opportunities for structured and unstructured play time.

In order to provide a variety of activities to practice social and communication skills, we need more high-quality toys in our classroom.

I chose several toys that students have to work together to build, such as the pipe builders, marble tower, and the roller ramp. These toys will require students to work together to build and work on requesting each piece by color, size or shape to complete. Some of the toys have picture directions that come with the activity so students will have to look at the picture and copy what they see. This is great for working on coordination and fine motor skills and working together to figure out how to complete the picture.

My students have a difficult time understanding games and sitting long enough to play a game. The games I chose for this project target fine motor skills and are highly motivating due to the cause and effect nature of the games. I have several students who love sirens, police cars, and firetrucks so I would like to give them the chance to engage in pretend play activities with costumes for those careers. Water and sand are very motivating activities for my students so I chose a few water and sand activities to work on interacting with each other and requesting items to play with.

This project will help create more activities during our social skills group time for students to interact with each other, share, take turns and work on communicating.
