Toxic Environment? You Decide.

My students need replacements for our consumable environmental chemistry labs. Soil lead tests and the gas analysis ampules are not reusable and need replenished every year.

My Students

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read about my class needs.

My students are in my diverse science courses in a traditional inner-city high school where we have over 50% free and reduced lunch.

There is nothing traditional, however, about the population. We educate a large refugee population from all over the world, minority populations and middle to upper-middle class students. It's quite the melting pot.

Science supplies are always expensive and difficult for which to find funding- we have funds for basic administrative supplies but there is no room in the budget for consumable replacement.

Environmental test kits are something that most students have not used at all up until they reach my classroom.

My Project

Environmental Justice is a real consideration for my students; most students live in lower-income neighborhoods. By using the environmental soil, home, and air quality tests students can test the soils and home in which they live.

By enticing students to wonder about their safety in their environment (especially Lead in the wake of Flint, Michigan) there will be more buy-in in a discipline (chemistry) which is notoriously difficult to come by.

When students become empowered to ask questions (environmental quality) and are given the tools to seek out those answers (the quality test kits), learning transfers from something textual to something intrinsic which is irreplaceable.
