My Students

School should be the one place students always feel safe in; unfortunately, the reality is far different. Students today, both inner city and suburban, face bullying in ways other generations could never have imagined. And all are a means to one end--to intimidate and humiliate the victim.

Currently, my 6th grade inner city students face or have witnessed all of the above manifestations of bullying; but as educators, it is our responsibility to teach them bullying and violence are never a means to an end.

My students are wonderfully bright and compassionate and only need the skills and strategies to combat bullying in intelligent ways. They are our future to a kinder and more loving world.

My Project

I would like to use Townsend Press' Bullying in Schools as a starting point to discuss bullying and give my students, like those in the book, a forum to tell their own stories; in addition, I will include real life examples of the consequences of bullying: the tragic deaths of two local children who both ended their own lives as a result of relentless campaigns of bullying by their peers. My project proposal for "Stand Up and Against Bullying!" is to involve my students in the creative process of playwriting; we are currently reading Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," and students themselves see examples of bullying between the feuding Montagues and Capulets. This is a wonderful segue to writing their own anti-bullying play. Using the playwriting and prop designing books, as well as the creative arts materials, students will write and design the set for the play, "Standing Up and Against Bullying!" Students will promote their message of compassion to two local elementary schools.

The younger children are, the easier it is to mold their character; older students are passed along to us and it is more challenging to change who they are; but like with anything, fruition takes time.

The discussion, creation, and performing of this play will alter my students' perceptions on the very real damage bullying inflicts on its victims. To those young students in the audience, this play will impact their lives by making them more accepting and loving: our hope to end bullying.
