My Students
While many of our students come from difficult or challenging backgrounds, our students have learned to love to read, which is a big deal for middle school. They read in class, in the hallways, the cafeteria, at home. They are hungry for new books all the time and they are excited to share these books with the students around them.
For many, this is the first time they've ever seen themselves in a book and it has been life-changing for them.
My Project
This beautiful novel is about a student who is homeless, living in a shelter, and placed into a new school where they are learning about the events of September 11th. She believes that this day has nothing to do with her because it was in the past. Little does she know that many of her life circumstances were caused directly by the Twin Towers falling. Her thoughts are challenged and she learns just how important it is to know what happened.
Many of our students feel like this tragic day has nothing to do with them but they share similar circumstances with the main character of the story.
Reading this book will challenge their viewpoints and their misconceptions of what happened on that day. It has so many curriculum connections and will speak to the background of our student population.
After reading this novel, our students will participate in our monthly book club where we will connect them with the author, discuss the novel, and will be working towards a community service project that includes building Little Free Libraries, filling them, and placing them out in our community and we will be reading appropriate books to the Kindergarten students at our local elementary school.
