My Project
Have you ever tried to get 6th graders, especially 6th grade boys, interested in a book? It can be difficult. Really difficult. Our school has recently lost our Title One Funding due to an increase in enrollment. Where this could be seen as a win, what it means in reality is we have the same number of children that benefit from Title One funding as before, add more students to that total but take away all of the supports we had in place. What you're left with a greater need and less money to fulfill that need. How can we support all of our students, no matter their economic standing, by engaging in literacy and motivation?
Enter Ghost by Jason Reynolds.
Students cannot resist this story of a young African American male who is fast, funny but not without fear. "Ghost," a nickname the main character gave himself because he feels invisible, is so relatable because many of our students identify with his struggles or know someone who does. From family drama, anger issues, making friends and being part of a team, Ghost works to become visible in his life. Our 6th grade mandated literature curriculum does not reflect an authentic voice of modern sixth graders. This book reaches our student population by meeting hem (and teachers!) where they are and showing them where they can go.
This small project of one class set will give 100+ students a chance to engage with literacy and they won't even know it! Ghost will be a welcome break and escape for all our students. Through humor, drama and sports our 6th graders, especially our boys, will identify with much of what the characters in this book face. One book can change a child's attitude to toward reading and toward themselves.
