Technology offers students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder many opportunities. In addition to traditional academic skills, our class focuses on communication, fine motor skills, and social interaction.
Autism is not a processing error, it's a different operating system.
My students require opportunities to practice and generalize skills that may come more easily to neuro-typical students. Technology is a key to unlocking their abilities.
My students are in a program called a Structured Learning Class. They are a small group of 6 students ranging in ages from 8-12 and have varying abilities. They all work on pre-requisite academic skills and access a modified curriculum with visual supports.
My Project
My students use technology to access their curriculum, pursue their interests, and interact with their friends and family. Our specifically designed, leveled curriculum is accessed via individual student logins on the computer.
Technology is a vital tool for many research based academic activities for students with Autism, and provides for opportunities not otherwise available to my students.
Touchscreen Chromebooks allow for students of any fine motor ability to receive immediate feedback on discrete trial activities as well as limiting the obstacles to navigate the educational programs we use daily. We use two specific software applications to practice academic and functional skills and collect ongoing data.
