My Project

This novel follows Cole Matthews, a troubled teen who, after committing a violent crime, is given the chance to avoid prison through a Native American healing practice called Circle Justice. Sent to a remote Alaskan island, Cole initially resists change, but after a life-threatening encounter with a mystical white bear, he begins to confront his anger and take responsibility for his actions. Through survival, self-reflection, and guidance from mentors, Cole learns the importance of accountability, empathy, and healing.

This novel is essential in a 7th grade ELA classroom because it explores themes of justice, personal transformation, and the power of second chances—topics that resonate deeply with middle school students.

It encourages critical discussions about choices and consequences while building empathy through rich character development. Additionally, Mikaelsen’s vivid writing style strengthens students’ comprehension skills, making it an engaging and meaningful addition to the curriculum.
