My Students

AVID is a college prep program that helps students in the AVID elective class successfully navigate their way TO and THROUGH a four-year university. The students meet together in the elective class for all four years of high school and they engage in content that helps build their college-ready skills as well as their college knowledge.

AVID's mission is to close the opportunity gap, so we serve students who might have one or more risk factors that would keep them from attending a four-year university.

In my classes, we have students who live in poverty, students who belong to ethnic and racial groups that are underrepresented in college, and students who will be the first in their family to attend college. They have all pushed themselves during their high school career to take more rigorous courses, like honors and AP courses, and engage in extra-curricular activities to develop both their academic and emotional preparation for college.

My Project

Did you know that most people are visual learners? Try this: close your eyes and picture "apple." Almost everyone sees an apple- usually red, shiny, with a healthy stem. It proves how visual we are. Having a variety of colorful highlighters, markers, and Post It notes help students visualize to recall the information they see in those vivid colors.

So using the colorful highlighters, Post It Notes, and markers helps students retain what they learn!

Twice a week my students bring their toughest questions from their toughest subjects and present them to their peers in a process called Tutorial. The process is incredible- it facilitates reflection, higher-level questioning, problem-solving, collaboration, confidence-building, and builds a positive classroom rapport. But tge process is hindered with a lack of crucial supplies. These AVID students need the appropriate materials to access the process and the content of their most challenging coursework. Dry erase markers, highlighters, and Post-It Notes will more easily and effectively facilitate the Tutorial process.
