My Students

Twice a week, my AVID students prepare questions from their other core subjects to bring to our class to present and work out with their peers. But our markers are out of ink!

My AVID students are kids who have traditional risk factors that might keep them out of college.

They might be the first in their family to go to college, they might have overcome adversity. They might come from an impoverished background, they might not have stellar grades. But they do all have one thing in common- they are determined to go to college!

My Project

Twice a week my students bring their toughest questions from their toughest subjects and present them to their peers in a process called Tutorial. Based on their subjects, I put them into three to five groups and they then present their problem to a small group of peers. The process is incredible- it facilitates reflection, higher-level questioning, problem-solving, collaboration, confidence-building, and builds a positive classroom rapport. But, with a dwindling number of dry erase markers, the process is hindered by a lack of supplies. These AVID students need the appropriate materials to access the process and the content of their most challenging course work.

Dry erase markers will more easily and effectively facilitate the Tutorial process. You can imagine how disruptive it can be when students who are working out their problem for the group and have to keep changing markers or writing things over so it is dark enough for their peers to read and copy into their notes.

Additionally, students need colored Post It notes and highlighters for note-taking during Tutorials and in their content classes.

Did you know that most people are visual learners? Try this: close your eyes and picture "apple." Almost everyone sees an apple- usually red, shiny, with a healthy stem. It proves how visual we are. Having a variety of colorful highlighters and Post It notes help students visualize to recall the information they see in those vivid colors. So using the colorful highlighters and notes helps students retain what they learn!
