it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Provide for students who are hungry to learn about turtles and tortoises!
I teach 4th grade in a high-need community. I work with English Language Learners and all of my students benefit from hands-on learning experiences where they can tangibly feel their learning happening!
My students LOVE my pet, Tortle the Tortoise. They have been reading different books and been doing research projects on turtles and tortoises. However, I do not have enough books about turtles and tortoises that are at the children's instructional levels. This leaves many students feeling like the projects are too hard or too easy with few students at the "just right" level. I want to provide different books for the differing levels of readers in my classroom.
That's where you come in!
The list of books I have compiled which are all about turtles or tortoises in some capacity, are leveled. This means that I can match the level of the book to the particular student and meet each students' needs in reading. Some of the books are non-fiction, fiction and folktales. The topic is something the students are already interested in - the books will allow the students to feel successful in reading and progress through the levels (they range from 2nd grade through the end of 5th grade).
Providing the books for the students will allow me as the teacher to plan for each child and make sure each child is progressing in their reading ability while providing a hands-on experience. By providing the books specifically about turtles and tortoises, science will be integrated into reading and writing in our classroom!
