Torque and Equilibrium in Physics Through the Construction of Mobiles
Help me give my students the materials to study torque through the construction of mobiles.

My Project
My physics students are consistently asked to perform complex multistep calculations involving "real-world" scenarios that only exist on paper. Our lab investigations break down the artificiality but are still constrained and limited in scope.
For our unit on torque, students will design a three-tier kinetic mobile in the style of Mondrian that demonstrates static equilibrium.
This project combines the worlds of art and physics. Students will be able to express their creativity through the choice and design of the objects hanging in the mobile. Students will then need to take numerous mass and distance measurements to prove static equilibrium of their mobiles.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
