My Students

The students in my school are simply amazing! They are in 5th through 8th grade at a rural Oklahoma middle school. They love to learn, have new experiences, participate in various activities, socialize, and accept new challenges. Our student body comes from all over the globe and they vary in their learning styles and abilities. We have a rapidly growing number of military students, a high population of Native American students, and several students are from right here in Oklahoma. Our great school also has many high achieving students, a Title I program, and we practice inclusion for special needs students. Our school promotes academic success utilizing unique experiences. We strive to make learning fun, rigorous, and relevant each and everyday while also focusing on building the character of our students.

My Project

Oklahoma weather is unpredictable and we seek to be prepared for all Mother Nature has in store. After a close encounter with a tornado in our town, we recognize a few supplies that would be nice to have during our severe weather season. First, we need weather radios with backup power. Our administrators monitor the weather closely but ideally classroom teachers should have the technology to make emergency decisions as well. Our school has two shelters on campus but we still have to manage to get students from various campus buildings to the shelter. Also once inside, we need a PA system to communicate with the kids to keep them informed and calm. We learned from experience that it is hard to talk over 750 nervous children without a microphone. The megaphones would also be helpful in communicating with teachers, students, and parents while transporting students from numerous buildings to the shelters. Often, warnings bring forth panic and it is necessary to have the resources needed to communicate important messages to a crowd. Megaphones, the PA system, and weather radios need to all be battery powered in case we lose our source of electricity. By obtaining these supplies, we will be better equipped to keep our students safe. Last, we are in need of a thermometer to use in our middle school building when the nurse is unavailable.
