I am so lucky to come from a school where parents, extended family, and the community are involved in getting kids excited to read. Many of my students come to my classroom and are thrilled about the books I have available in class and can’t wait to start reading them!
By 5th grade, most kids have already decided how they feel about reading, they either really love it or hate it with a passion and don’t want to do it at all.
It is one of my favorite things to find the “perfect” book for a child and change their mind about reading. Reading is a wonderful gift that I love to share with my students.
The students at my school are pushed to complete a 40-book challenge in the 5th grade. For students who haven't yet found "the book" yet that ignites their passion for reading, this challenge is very difficult. This book list was put together from avid readers in my class as well as books that I have read and think my students will love. I hope that having more books in class, I will have a better chance of reaching even my most reluctant readers.
My Project
As my students entered my class for the first time, one of them shouted, "Mrs. L.' your class is a small, glorified library!" I pride myself in having a class library where any child can find the perfect book for them and being able to help them find that book. The books on this list are books that my students have suggested, either because they have completed or started them and think their friends would enjoy them.
Donations for this project will help my students have access to peer selected books- a huge motivator to start a new book!
