I teach Pre-K through 5th grade music in a low-income community. I see every student in the building at least twice a week and I see the older grades (3rd, 4th, and 5th) three times a week. Most of the students in my building love to learn and the teachers encourage this desire through all the grade levels. Learning occurs in a hands-on way in all subject areas, including music.
My older students are hooked on the recorder. They absolutely love it! When each student has an instrument to play, the focus in the classroom is increased and the behavior problems almost disappear. The problem is, I don't have nearly enough recorders for all of my students.
I need enough recorders so that every 4th and 5th grade student can have an instrument to play in class. This will help them learn to read music, play as an ensemble, become responsible for an instrument, and prepare for music classes in middle school.
You will make it possible for each of my 4th and 4th grade students to have "their own" instrument to play in the classroom. This is a vital part of building the music program in my school and preparing my students to go into music programs in middle school. Thank you for your help!
