As a child, I can remember racing my siblings to the Sunday paper in order to read the comics. I learned to love to read by reading Peanuts, Archie, and even Calvin and Hobbes. I want to help my students develop this love for reading using some of the great graphic novels that are available today.
I am a special education teacher in a large, rural elementary school near the coast of South Carolina.
I get the privilege every day to work with some of the greatest students. They want so badly to become better readers and I want to help them reach their goal.
My Project
My students have fallen in love with graphic novels such as The Dork Diaries and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I want to build on their interest and add additional graphic novels to our classroom library including 3 from the Graphic Sparks series, 6 from the Graphic America series, Huckleberry Finn, and a Boxcar Children set. I believe that the addition of the graphic novels I am requesting will help keep my students interested in reading. As an added bonus, the 6 graphic novels from the Graphic America series will also help reinforce the lessons learned in Social Studies such as the end of slavery (Free at Last), the industrial revolution (The Revolution in Industry) and the westward expansion (Westward, Ho!).
For students that struggle with reading, the best way to help them improve their reading is to keep them reading.
In order to keep them reading, we must provide them with material that it on their independent reading level and that interests them. I believe these graphic novels will do just that. Please help me to make every day a learning adventure.
