My Students

A typical day in my classroom consists of students who struggle with reading. The biggest challenge is that my library is in need of high interest books to build not only their confidence, but build their vocabulary, fluency & comprehension skills along with the pure joy of reading through comics!

The students I serve are at risk for falling through the cracks in the area of literacy.

Their ability to pronounce the sounds of letters, recognize sights words, read phrases fluently, and comprehend/ understand what they are reading has been limited due to learning disabilities, social ills and/or lack of materials at school/home to reinforce reading skills. I am fortunate to teach in an area where students are unsung heroes. The average student is able to enjoy "being a kid"; however, my students think mostly of survival as the people in their community struggle with social ills associated with poverty, high-crime, gang-infestation, illiteracy and homelessness. Nevertheless, my students beat the odds and attend school to find solace in a nurturing and academic-focused environment. In addition to regular school attendance, my students are high achievers and take pride in their learning. They are well aware that through education they can dream BIG and make dreams come true!

My Project

The material selected to target the reading deficits of my students are books that will allow my students to read stories through the eyes of cartoons! What better way to get young students interested in reading! The perfect resource for my students is the "TOON into Reading Comics Genre Study". It combines comics with a rigorous curriculum that supports students in reading, listening, speaking and fluency. For my students who are visual learners and/or non-readers, they are still able to read the images to tell and comprehend the essence of the story. This unit also emphasizes the development of students’ verbal and visual literacy skills through 92 books that are used to read to whole class & small group instruction along with a Teacher's Guide with 30 complete lessons, objectives and assignments. My visual learners and non-readers will be fascinated by the ability to comprehend a story through images!

Research has shown that the lack of exposure & resources are among the disparities of the achievement gap.

Donating to this project, my students walk away from the poverty line towards the pipeline of success through comic books that will help improve their reading skills and enhance their aptitude for taking risks in reading. The majority of my students are visual learners. I love the fact that I am able to teach students according to their learning style. "Oh the places, we will Go! Dr. Seuss!
