This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every morning, many of our 6th graders walk into our ELA class buzzing and energetic, ready to learn. They come with questions, deep insights, and bright ideas. We carve out time every week to read independently to help build their reading stamina. But unfortunately, not all of them enjoy reading.

Many of our students read below grade level, which undoubtedly affects their desire and motivation to read.

They need books that will pique their interest and help them fall in love with reading. As we all know, reading is fundamental.

Living in what was once considered "the poorest congressional district in the country", otherwise known as the South Bronx, our students face more challenges than some people we may know. Our school serves a population where 90%+ of the students receive free lunch and come from low-income neighborhoods. Despite the challenges they may face outside of our walls, they give school their all and try their hardest every day.

My Project

Having books that are not only on their individual reading level, but that are engaging will help many of our reluctant readers. Ten new books to our 6th grade library will help reach 80 of our 6th graders.

Comic books are a fun way to awaken the reader in every child.

We believe there is a book out there for every child. One book does not fit all, so a variety of books, including these new comic books, would be a fantastic addition to our library. We want reading to be fun for our students. As the saying goes, "A book is a gift you can open again and again."
