Toon Into Comics...Genre Study

My students need Toon Into Comics books and curriculum guide to help them reinforce Core Curriculum literacy skills through the use of visual arts and creativity.

My Students

Reading and writing can seem scary. Writers block often comes from staring at a blank piece of paper. TOON Books will help first and second graders learn to get their ideas onto paper while reinforcing literacy skills being taught in their classrooms in a fun and creative way!

We are an elementary school with students in grades 1-5.

My art students thrive on authentic art experiences and connections in my art room are made to help support the regular classroom teachers teaching their curriculum. Students are able to learn the content area concepts in a meaningful and different way through reinforcement in my art class.

My Project

This rigorous curriculum unit includes 30 lesson plans that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards for reading, writing, and speaking and listening, along with the complete collection of leveled TOON Books (92 BOOKS TOTAL!), to teach students verbal and visual literacy through quality comics. The genre study culminates with a publishing party at which students present their self-authored comic books.

Creativity should be a part of learning.

By providing students an opportunity to practice and apply the skills learned in the classroom with the arts gives them a non-threatening and fun way to learn. Students will use these materials as part of our Talent Development program and opportunities to share their final products will be enjoyed by students participating as well as with those who did not participate in the cluster opportunity.
