My Students

I have the sweetest group of fourth graders to ever walk this planet! Okay, so that may not be completely true, but I sure love this great group.

Our school serves a lot of individual students with various struggles that require great courage on their part, in dealing with challenges, each and every day.

This includes the Autism spectrum, ADHD, speech and developmental delays, anxiety disorder, high poverty, and those that have other personal and very real emotional struggles.

Each day, I make sure to have every student tell me at least one victory for the day or great thing that happened that day. I love seeing their faces light up as they realize that education can be exciting and enjoyable. Recently, I had a student leave class with a big grin on his face and say to me "Mrs. Beck, I LOVED science today. I never knew learning could be so much fun." That makes all the extra hours worth it, knowing that at least ONE student has found the thrill in learning and hope in knowing that education can be an amazing journey.

My Project

I love to read. I have loved reading as long as I can remember. I also realize that not all my students share my love of reading, and I would like to change that.

I truly believe that anyone can learn to love reading IF they find something that grabs their attention and addresses an interest that is already there.

Kids love comic books. These toon books fit the same criteria with their engaging pictures but also with challenging text.

I'm a firm believer in a classroom library and have invested greatly in building up mine with hundreds of books. However, I am lacking in the way of graphic literature with visual narrative. I would love to have other options available for my reluctant readers
