My Students

My students come from a low-income/high poverty area and are very diverse, both in race and socioeconomic status. One hundred percent of our students receive free lunch and breakfast. Many have experienced trauma and have some tough home lives, but that doesn't bring them down. They come to school every day and are very eager to learn.

Even with all their struggles, my students work very hard and take great pride when they accomplish a tough lesson.

They are enthusiastic about learning and excited to explore new learning opportunities every day!

My Project

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, our scholars have had many different school experiences over the last three years: fully in-person learning, hybrid learning, fully virtual learning, or some combination of all three. They have met challenges with resilience, flexibility, and grace, but part of what this means is that there are MANY different reading levels present in my classroom. Some scholars are just beginning to unlock the keys to fluent reading, while others are devouring lengthy chapter books. When so many different reading levels are present, it is critically important that the classroom library reflects each of those reading levels.

My students love graphic novels, books with elements of magic, and beginning chapter books that include characters that look like them.

In a diverse classroom, diverse book choices including characters of all cultures, races, and abilities help every scholar feel included.

This TOON graphic novel set is the perfect choice to meet many of those needs and interests! The graphic novels have an approachable format for my less confident readers but are equally enjoyable for fluent readers. They cover a variety of content areas, genres, and interests, and include characters from a variety of cultures, races, and ability levels. I know my scholars will be most interested in titles such as "Blancaflor, The Hero with Secret Powers: A Folktale from Latin America / Blancaflor, la heroína con poderes secretos: un cuento de Latinoamérica" and "Comics: Easy as ABC." There are also titles that will prepare them with some content knowledge for subjects learned in later grades, such as books covering mythology that they will learn more about in 4th grade. I also love, love, love that some of the titles come in English and in Spanish! I'm so excited to be able to share these books with our scholars!
