My Students
"You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have." ~Maya Angelou. My students need to practice creative writing and many don't have the supplies at home. We have Author's Boxes that go home with students so that they may work on their own authors craft.
We are a fairly small school in a rural town.
We have only two classes per grade. Our class sizes are growing, and we seem to have less funds for supplies. Our classrooms are all small learning communities which carry over into the larger school setting. Being in school is often the one place where many of our children have to socialize with other children and to be part of a group other than in their own family.
Since they are second graders, they have active minds and bodies. They need to be engaged and focused to meet the demands of today's curriculum standards. We have a few Hokki stools which has had such a positive affect on my students and their learning.
My Project
For several years, I have offered Author's Boxes as a way for children to practice writing at home. I usually purchase these items myself, but find it becoming more difficult to manage. These are large craft boxes decorated and labeled "Author's Box" and include a variety of writing and craft supplies (i.e. scrapbook paper, crayons, stickers, lined paper, scissors, etc). Students may choose to write anything they are interested in while practicing what they know about good writing. Each night, a handful of students take these boxes home to write and then share them at Morning Meeting the next day. Children learn to love writing, become more creative, and spend more time with families doing something fun in a meaningful way at their own level. They practice writing, spelling, story telling, speaking, and listening skills. They practice important dispositions such as self-management skills, creativity, pride, and responsibility.
The Hokki stools help meet the needs of my active learners.
The Author's Boxes have become a favorite of my students from year to year and children gain so much from being given the supplies to work with and the freedom to choose.
My students need craft paper, and stickers to build on their own natural 7 and 8-year old creativity. They also need to be active and the Hokki stools will help meet some of the physical need to move which helps stimulates learning.
