Tools to Jot Down Thinking With.

Help me give my students some tools that will help them notate when they read and save their thoughts for later discussions. Students love writing utensils and the gel pens will be very exciting for them.

My Students

My students are great. As a middle school teacher, I work with students in grades 6th, 7th and 8th and I have a 7th grade advisory as well. I interact with approximately 75 students per day and I see my advisory twice a day.

As a Reading Specialist my goal is always to motivate students to enter and interact with the "reading zone." I so want them to experience the joys that reading can bring.

Unfortunately, with most of the students I see, lack of motivation runs rampant. Most of these students have a very difficult time finding something that holds their interest and that motivates them to keep reading.

Once students find something they are willing to read, they are very often asked to notate and find passages that pertain to various work in class. I want my students to be motivated to do this.

My Project

The supplies that I have requested will help motivate my students to complete tasks around "close reading" of text.

"Cool tools" like gel pens, post-its and expo markers will make notating fun and will push students to want to complete assignments associated with them.

When students are asked to jot down their thinking as they read; say around story elements connections or theme, they are much more likely to complete the assignment. with the right materials. They use the notes and pens, as they read ,to mark passages that are important to the outcome. Expo markers are used on the white board to help ELL or special needs students.
