Our elementary school maintains a student-centered approach to education. Through this lens, we have identified three areas where students need support to grow and be successful: providing a compassionate school environment; providing a global education experience through our dual language program; and by integrating technology and STEM into students’ daily learning.
As the school counselor, the projects you will see from me will be focused on building a compassionate, trauma-informed school environment, a place where students feel safe, respected, and free to learn and be themselves.
You will see projects asking for resources that promote healing. As a Title I school last year, all students at our school received free breakfast and lunch. Our school is a high needs school, but our students try their best every day despite what is happening in their lives, and it is my hope to give them additional tools for success.
My Project
These items are being requested for use in my counseling office and in our Turn Around Room. Students will use them to sharpen their saws! This means they will focus on improving and taking care of their social/emotional health so they can be the best students and kids they can be! These items will help students calm down when they are frustrated, scared, mad, or sad; this way they can calm down and go back to class able to focus and learn effectively.
At our school we believe that we must first teach students to focus and calm their minds before we can expect to fill them.
Therefore we are requesting items to help the students feel in charge of their emotions.
A sand tray will help communicate with students who are shut down, cannot speak English, or who communicate better through play than through traditional talk therapy.
I am bringing a lot of calming tools and feeling books from my old school so I need soft bins to store those tools as well as a place to keep snacks for hungry students.
A lot of students struggle with sensory concerns so these help to calm overactive nervous systems when fight or flight is activated.
Bean Bags will give them a soft and safe place to sit.
