Help me give my students art materials to express themselves. I am a virtual teacher. I sent home watercolor tools. I am hoping I can let them keep these to continue to create and express themselves post-COVID.
They care for classmates, school, our world, and learning. My third graders learn to stick their neck out stretching their mind with new learning with a strong Growth Mindset that they’ll persist and persevere until the “not yet” becomes the “I did it”. They love to look out for friends and work together collaborating on projects. Like a giraffe uses its prehensile tongue to grab their favorite foods, my students use their prehensile thumb to grow food in the garden for others!
My Project
I have my Master's in Teaching Art. I knew my virtual students, who were signed up to be virtual all year, would need hands-on materials to use at home to both follow my lessons and use to express their emotions through art during this challenging time.
I am hoping to let them keep what I gave them and replace these tools for my future classes.
While teaching about texture and depth to their watercolor art, my students enjoyed adding salt to their watercolor pumpkins. They learned to express weather by tearing cotton balls and painting clouds with the tools I had sent home. They had fun painting flowers after learning about Van Gogh's Sunflowers. The new paint and brushes will replace the paint palettes and brushes I gave away this year. When teaching about the first settlers, my students created charcoal drawings of covered wagons learning how art was created then from sticks out of the fire. My students enjoyed Zoom breaks, going outside, and painting botanical pictures. There are many ways students enjoyed creating art to express their favorite part of a book, making math pictures, or showing how they feel.
I am hoping to let them keep what I gave them as an end-of-the-year gift to encourage them to continue expressing themselves through art. Thank you for helping my students' social-emotional needs by giving them materials to express their emotions via art.
