My Project
In my TK/K special day class, I work with a group of sweet, loving children with autism who bring so much joy to our classroom. Many of them are non-verbal and have unique sensory needs that affect how they engage with their environment and learning activities. To help them feel safe, calm, and focused, I’m creating a sensory toolbox filled with items like sensory sand, playdough, and fidget toys.
These tools are not just fun—they are essential.
Sensory sand and playdough help with fine motor development and provide calming tactile input that can reduce anxiety and improve focus. Fidget toys offer a quiet and appropriate way for students to release energy or regulate their sensory systems during transitions or seated work. When students have access to the sensory input they need, they are better able to engage, communicate, and learn.
By creating a structured, sensory-friendly environment, I can meet my students where they are and support their social-emotional and academic growth in a way that respects and responds to their individual needs.
