My Students

MHS is the alternative high school for the entire school district, one of the largest districts in the state. Students are admitted from across the district high schools based on severe needs that may conflict with a student's ability to graduate or be successful in their secondary education. Many students suffer economic duress and COVID-19 placed an insurmountable burden on our families, many of whom could not afford computers, internet access, phones, and other means that most other schools used to compensate for remote learning. We have been able to continue in-person learning after the initial shutdown and hope to be able to do so. It is critical for our students' success that they be here in person. It is the most successful mode of learning for our clientele.

My Project

One of the most troublesome 'gatekeepers' of student comprehension in our alternative high school is that of mathematics. The majority of our students are preparing to leave education and enter the workplace (trades) and/or military. Students are often unable to manipulate basic mathematical principles because they are kinesthetic learners often immersed in mathematics taught without meaningful manipulatives. By donating to our project, you will provide dial calipers that will directly increase student competency in basic mathematics, precision measuring, and the true replication of tools used in the careers they will soon be experiencing.
